I'll be 56 Tuesday. I've been playing slowpitch since 1987, but today was a first. I got hit on the top of my head by my own popup as I ran to first! Fortunately I was in foul territory. The umpire said he'd never seen that before. When I started to run I knew there was a good possibility of getting hit, but I didn't want the catcher to get to it. It hurt some at the time, but I kinda forgot about it during the game. Now that I'm home I can feel a bump and it feels like the skin is broken.

I've always said, "If you can't make the play, at least thrill the crowd!"

Ouch!

I play and umpire a ton of games and have seen this happen maybe three times before- all while umpiring and none while playing. But it is rare! The three times I've seen while umpiring encompasses a span of approximately 12 years and 1000 games.

There's never a camera around when you want one! Actually, I'm not sure I want that on film.

Four years ago, I was playing way too deep at ss, runner on 1st, 1 out. Groundball to the 2nd baseman. I ran as hard as I could, knowing it was going to be a close play at 2nd. I also knew I didn't want my foot planted when the runner got there. I caught the throw, stepped on 2nd for the force, and immediately jerked my leg backwards. Apparently my other foot was still off the ground, and I did a 270 degree flip over the sliding runner landing hard on my hip and back 6 feet beyond 2nd base! No camera then either! That, I would like to have on video!!!
